Man arrested for naming his dog Buhari
Joe Fortemose Chinakwe has been arrested by the police State Police command for naming his pet dog Buhari.
30 year old Chinakwe who is a trader and lives in No. 10, Omikunle Street, Sango-Ota, Ogun State, was arrested last weekend after his neighbour who is from Northern part of the country complained that he named his dog after his father, Alhaji Buhari.
It is equally reported according to Vanguard that the neighbourhood where the Chinakwe lives is dominated by the Northerners.
However, the dog has been declared missing and intelligence reports has it that its either the suspect had secretly arranged the dog to be taken far away from sight or must have ordered it to be killed and eaten by his friends to avoid any suspicion.
Every effort made by the Chinakwe’s kinsmen to bail him were denied by the police.
Reacting to the situation, the spokesperson for Police, Abimbola Oyeyemi, ASP, said he made inquiries and discovered the man bought the dog and wrote Buhari on both sides of its body.
He continues, “One Mallam lodged a complaint and when our men got there, we found out that it was true. You know such thing can cause serious breach of the peace and ethnic or religious unrest. We are charging him to court for conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.”
“He was arrested last Saturday and we are taking him to court later today (Tuesday) or tomorrow morning (today). You know an average Northerner will feel bad over such a thing. It can cause serious ethnic crisis or religious confrontation because when you are relegating such a name to a certain person, you are indirectly insulting him.”
However Chinakwe’s brother, Chiedozie said the suspect never had intention of causing troubles by naming his pet dog after a person, saying he is a lover of dogs and he usually name them after what is motivated by.
“He bought this dog a year ago and named it Buhari. Unfortunately, some Northerners, who dominate the vicinity where he resides misconstrued his intention and connived to take him up. The complainant then claimed it was derogatory because his father answers Buhari”, suspect’s brother said.
The complainant and his kinsmen are reported to have threatened to kill Chinakwe if he is released on bail.
